Build a simple pre-trip routine

My environmental check takes only a few minutes:

  1. Look for fuel, oil, and coolant leaks.
  2. Secure bottles, bags, fishing gear, and loose equipment.
  3. Check the bilge.
  4. Confirm that waste and sewage systems are ready.
  5. Review the route for shallow habitats and wildlife areas.
  6. Carry waste bags and absorbent pads.
  7. Plan where I will refuel, pump out, and dispose of used materials.

These steps do not make boating difficult. They make problems easier to spot before they reach the water.

I cannot control every condition on the sea, but I can control how I prepare, operate, and maintain my boat. A clean wake, a careful anchor, a secured piece of line, and a leak repaired before departure all support healthier water.

Loving the sea is more than enjoying the view. It means leaving the water as close as possible to the way I found it.
